Wellbeing at Work for Charities 2025 – Online conference

Join us for a transformative day focused on enhancing wellbeing in the charity sector.

There is no doubt that working in the charity sector can be extremely rewarding as we work to serve our beneficiaries, improve our communities and make a positive impact on society. However, it can also be challenging as we navigate a tough environment with more to do and more people to help, which in turn, can affect our own wellbeing. Looking after ourselves and our staff is key to a productive and supported work environment. Furthermore, a recent survey by Acas has shown that 9 in 10 employees think it is important for bosses to prioritise staff mental health at work*.

Join us for a mix of keynote sessions, panel discussions, expert led sessions and practical workshops where we’ll explore practical strategies and approaches to foster wellbeing at work in the charity sector.

We will cover creating a culture of wellbeing, looking after yourself, thriving in difficult times and policies and procedures to better equip managers and staff to manage their own and others wellbeing.

Chair: George Knight, Training Consultant, DSC.

09.50 – 10.30 – Keynote: Our Wellbeing Journey

In this keynote session, Amber-Rose Knight will share insights into CALM’s wellbeing journey—what worked, what didn’t, and the lessons learned along the way. Join Amber-Rose to explore practical approaches to creating a wellbeing-focused culture that not only supports employees but also enhances organisational success.

10.30 – 11.15 – Supporting Your Team: A Human Approach to Workplace Wellbeing

Workplace wellbeing isn’t just about policies and procedures—it’s about how they are brought to life through leadership, culture, and everyday actions. In this session, we’ll explore the role of managers in creating a genuinely supportive work environment. We’ll look at how policies and procedures work best when they’re more than just words on a page, even on a budget. Most importantly, we’ll focus on the real impact of human connection, trust, and everyday leadership in fostering a thriving, engaged team.

Speaker: Claire Warner, charity wellbeing, culture and leadership specialist

11.30 – 12.15 – How to Create a Culture of Wellbeing

Creating a culture of wellbeing starts at the top and it is vital this is communicated and discussed often. In this session, we will equip managers and leaders with tools to foster a supportive and healthy workplace culture.

Speakers: Debra Allcock Tyler, CEO, DSC; Kalli Jayasuriya, Researcher, DSC; Jessica Threlfall, Senior Researcher, DSC and Harry Wrafter, Executive Office Manager, DSC.

13.15 – 14.15 –  Panel Discussion – The Changing Workplace

In the last few years, the workplace has changed significantly as more and more organisations offer home working and 4 day working weeks. Those that have made the switch from office to home (or a mix of both) and a shorter working week, have reported improved productivity and a more positive workforce with a better work/life balance.  Join our panel as we discuss the changes their organisation has made to their working week and how this has helped increase wellbeing.

Speakers: Alison Dunn, CEO, The Society Matters Group (including CEO, Citizens Advice Gateshead); Mike Podmore, CEO, STOPAIDS; Sue Lewis, People Experience Specialist, British Red Cross.

14.15 – 14.30 –  Coffee break

14.30 – 15.15 –  The Constant of Change: Thriving Amid the Shift

Change is all around us and that is especially true for charities as we increasingly need to navigate funding cuts, government changes, societal shifts and an increased demand for services. The list goes on. Adapting to change can be difficult for yourself and those you support.

Join us for one of two workshops on navigating change. No need to pre-select your session – just attend the one that’s relevant for you on the day.

A) Thriving in difficult and changing times

If there is one thing we known stays the same in our sector is that “change” is inevitable. Although we may have little, if any control over what might change, what we can control is how we personally respond because progress in the face of change is optional. Together we will consider:

  • Various human responses to change
  • Where emotional intelligence plays a part
  • Some strategies we can utilise in our own workspaces to remain focussed and productive

Speaker: Eileen Browne, Training Consultant, DSC

B) Supporting others through changing times

This session is for those with a responsibility for line or team management of others. With tough times ahead – and the constant always being ‘change’, this session will look at how we can provide practical and emotional support to those we are supporting in their work. We will:

  • Explore the change curve and behaviours they can anticipate from their team members at different stages
  • Identify ways they can support people at different stages on the change curve
  • Consider the need for extra and timely communication during change periods

Speaker: Cathy Shimmin, Senior Training Consultant, DSC.

15.15 – 16.00 –  Looking after Yourself

Taking care of yourself is not a luxury. However, as you continue to find yourself juggling multiple tasks and responsibilities at work and at home, it is easy to forget the importance of prioritising your own wellbeing. This session focuses on practical strategies to nurture your mental, emotional and physical health to prevent burnout.

Speaker: George Knight, Training Consultant, DSC.

16.00 – 16.10 –  Closing remarks and setting intentions for a healthier workplace
