The Charity Management Conference - Online on Thursday 6 March

Managers have a crucial role in the overall leadership structure of any organisation. They are often the ones who fill the gap between the Board, CEO and senior managers and have to juggle those demands as well as the needs and challenges of the people they manage and for whom they are accountable. Finding that balance can be difficult and sometimes feel overwhelming.

This conference will look at some of the key areas you may be concerned about and is a mix of keynotes, workshop sessions and an opportunity to network with fellow attendees. You will hear from a range of speakers on key areas such as understanding the manager/leader dichotomy, getting your work done whilst managing your team members, understanding the power of delegation, managing performance, dealing with differences and thereby keeping yourself and your team well.

This conference is critical for anyone in a middle or high-level management role in any size or type of charity.

 09.35 – 10.15:  Keynote – The Power of the Management Role 

A CEO’s thoughts about the extra-ordinary impact of the management role and the people who take up the challenge.  

Speaker: Debra Allcock Tyler, CEO, DSC

10.15 – 11.00:  The Management/Leadership Relationship 

Can you be a good manager without being a good leader? Or vice versa? In this workshop we’ll explore the relationship and distinctions between the two, think about what we are doing in our roles and consider who is serving who in the management and leadership reporting line.

11.00 – 11.15: Coffee Break 

11.15 – 12.00: Managing People, Projects and Priorities 

There’s nothing quite like the cocktail of people, projects and priorities to send one’s blood pressure through the roof. But worry not, in this session DSC’s Head of Research will help you to lead the people, manage the projects, and direct the priorities like a pro!

12.00 – 12.45: Beyond Neurodiversity ‘Awareness’  

Changing your working practices to improve neuro-inclusion.

• 13.00 – 13.30 – Eat lunch in a networking group where you can share problems and solutions

13.30 – 14.15: Delegation is Good! Honest!  

Some managers perhaps through their own negative experiences have created and legitimised the barriers they have put in their way to effectively delegate work to others. This session aims to demystify delegation and to demonstrate the powerful management tool that it can be.

14.15 – 15.00:  Purposeful Performance Management  

Learn to navigate the core challenges of people management, covering essentials like handling performance issues and managing setbacks. We will look at setting clear boundaries and giving constructive feedback that encourages growth. Ideal for anyone managing staff, this session aims to build confidence and equip you to work effectively with your team.

15.15 – 16.00: Making Better Decisions 

Decisions are typically taken to solve problems or to move something forward. As managers and leaders it is important to be clear on whether a decision is really needed and if it is, how to make the best approach.

In this workshop we will consider:

• The psychological factors affecting decision making
• Prior thinking – types of decision and who should be taking them
• Preparation, people and process.

16.00 – 16.25:  Closing Keynote: – Making It Through 

Our speaker will share a personal story of the challenges they have faced as a manager, what mistakes they made, the battle wound scars and the success that was waiting for them.
