Our Researcher Mairéad Bailie brings you all the latest news from the sector.
Lack of diversity on charity boards
New research has found a considerable lack of diversity on charity boards with men outnumbering women trustees by two to one, and the majority of trustees being white, older and above average income and education – the report suggests that charities do more to promote diversity on their boards. Research also found that majority of trustees feel positively about their role and are satisfied with the personal reward it gives to them.
Legislation to allow quick conversion to CIO status
According to an article in Third Sector, legislation which will potentially allow ‘charities and community interest companies’ to convert quickly to charitable incorporated organisations has been approved. The new legislation would allow ‘CICs and charities with company structures to convert quickly into CIOs from January’.
Social care charities back-pay
Following last week’s update, MPs have questioned the Social Care Compliance Scheme which gives 15 months for charities to pay the total of around £400 million owed in back-pay to care workers for sleep-in shifts. Considering many charities felt they were “writing their own suicide notes” if they took part, the government has been asked whether they would reconsider and find a long-term solution to avoid crisis in the social care sector.
